Turn on notifications
Get reminders even with Ring List closed. Turn on Settings › General › Notifications on each phone and computer you want them on.
With notifications on, your reminders arrive on your phone or computer even when Ring List is closed. Turn them on once on each device. Until a device has them on, reminders come by email.
Turn them on
On an iPhone
- Open Ring List in Safari. Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. (This needs iOS 16.4 or later.)
- Open Ring List from its new icon on your Home Screen.
- Tap the gear to open Settings, then General. Under Notifications, choose On.
- Tap Allow when your iPhone asks.
Until Ring List is on your Home Screen, Off and On are grayed out. See Install Ring List.
On Android
- Tap the gear to open Settings, then General. Under Notifications, choose On.
- Tap Allow when the phone asks.
On a computer
- Click the gear to open Settings, then General. Under Notifications, choose On.
- Click Allow when the browser asks.
The browser has to be running for them to arrive, though its windows can be closed.
Then press Send a test. A notification should arrive in a moment.
What arrives
- Reminders you’ve set on tasks.
- Due now, when a task due at a time reaches its time.
- No plan yet today. Plan your day? at 8:30 a.m., when nothing is planned yet. See The daily plan reminder.
- When a Focus ring ends while Ring List is out of sight.
A habit’s reminder shows its streak, with a Done button that checks it in.
Reminders by email
When a reminder’s time comes and none of your devices can be notified, Ring List emails it to the address you sign in with. The subject is the task’s words, and the link opens its list. A task due at a time is emailed the same way.
To change that, open Settings, then General. Under Email me reminders, choose:
- When no device can be notified: an email only when no notification got through. This is how it starts.
- Always: an email as well as the notification.
- Never: no emails.
The setting follows you to all your devices. At most 20 reminders a day are emailed, and none when Ring List’s emails for the month run short. One that isn’t emailed shows the next time you open Ring List. The morning No plan yet today is never emailed.
Leave a list out
On Ring Lists, hold the list’s ring and let go, or on a computer right-click it. Choose Turn off notifications. Turn on notifications brings them back. A list left out sends no emails either.
None arriving?
Press ⓘ beside Notifications. It says what this device needs, step by step: usually a setting in the phone’s or computer’s own Notifications settings. Do Not Disturb and Focus modes hold them back too.
