Back up a list or take it elsewhere

A ring’s menu downloads its list as a file: a full backup to bring it back later, or clean Markdown for another app. It’s one list at a time.

Download a list

The file is named after the list (a list called House is House.md) and goes where your browser keeps downloads. Nothing in Ring List changes.

• Download full backup keeps everything Ring List knows about the list. Use it to bring the list back later.
• Download clean Markdown is the list as you see it, without Ring List’s hidden bookkeeping. Use it to share the list or open it in another app.

The file holds the list only: not your Light, settings or habit history. Pictures and files on tasks are in it as links, not as the files themselves.

Bring a list back

1. On Ring Lists, tap or click the dashed + circle, then import.
2. Set From to Ring List.
3. Tap or click Choose the .md files and pick the file. Several at once is fine.

A full backup of a list you deleted comes back as it was: in Today’s Plan where it was, with its Light. If the list is still there, the file comes in as a second list beside it; nothing is merged or replaced.

Import any Markdown or text file

The same steps bring in a .md or .txt file from anywhere, as a new list:

• # Title names the list. With none, the list is named after the file.
• ## starts a section, and ### a subsection.
• - [ ] is a task, - [x] a finished one. Indent a task under another to make it a subtask.
• @word is a label, and !!!, !! or ! at the start of a task its priority.
• Any other line is a note.

A file over 1 MB is too big.
