Make your own labels

In Settings › Labels, make a label with your own symbol and name, put your labels in order, and rename, merge or delete them.

Settings › Labels on a phone: each label with its symbol, its name, a 🔒 on some, and how many open tasks have it

Open Settings (the gear at the top right), then Labels. You can also get there from Edit labels… at the bottom of the Others… card.

Your labels are kept with your account, so they’re the same on every device.

Make a new label

  1. Tap or click + New label at the end of the list.
  2. Fill in:
    • Symbol (if you want one): one emoji, or up to 4 letters or numbers. Without one, the label shows as @name and can’t be in the menus.
    • Name: letters, numbers, - and _. A space becomes _.
    • Description (if you want one): what it’s for.
    • Priority hint: where its tasks go in Top Priorities and What’s Due, among those of the same priority. +3 also puts them always in Top Priorities.
    • Include in menus: whether it’s in the 🏷️ menu and the right-click row.
  3. Press Save.

The new label goes at the end of the order. Typing a new @name on a task also makes a label, with no symbol.

Put them in order

The order here is the order everywhere: on a task, in the menus and in Search All.

On a phone

Hold a label until it lifts, then drag it.

On a computer

Drag a label by its ⠿. Or, with a label selected, press Alt+↑ or Alt+↓ (Option on a Mac).

Change, merge or delete one

  • Change it: tap or click it, change what you want, and press Save. A new name changes on every task at once.
  • Merge two: give one label the other’s name, then press Merge into and that name. Its tasks get the other label. A note offers Undo.
  • Delete it: tap or click its ✕. Ring List says how many tasks it comes off and asks first. A note offers Undo.

A built-in label you’ve deleted can come back: Add back is at the bottom of the list.
